...but it’s been a while since I’ve seen any posts about current events here, and it feels like things are starting to spiral. It’s difficult to read about what’s going on and not feel some mixture of fury, anxiety and sadness. I’m not the only one who’s worried about things getting worse, am I?

Just pass the rum and carry on.

It was all a bit comedic watching all the events over the past few years unfold. Now it’s getting quite dark and sinister. Similar issues arising over here in Australia too. Evoking nationalism to buy votes and sell guns.

Trump is doing his usual distraction ordeal but there are more and more innocent people paying the price. I honestly think he might not be an actual racist, and more just an excellent distractor. At the end of the day he is a weak coward that’s going to do his best to maintain his cushy lifestyle.

I saw reports of that shooting on the my local news, the BBC, the Huffington Post, and the CBC. My nonna saw it on all the cable news sites and asked me about it. Cops kill crazy  people every day in the US and it definitely doesn’t get picked up by the BBC.

Where do you get you get your news from?

Gawker sites?

meh, Obama detained and deported far more immigrants than Trump, and in worse conditions. Nothing new there.

As for the kerfuffle over his “go back where you came from” tweet(s), that’s nationalism, not racism. Trump was elected on a nationalist platform, so that should come as no surprise.

I think we’ve reached a bit  of an equilibrium here. The actual racists have been weeded out, we all know politicians are full of shit, and we all like each other enough to let bygones be bygones.

Also, bro, there’s a mid engined Covfefe. Illuminati confirmed.

TBH, a crazy guy getting shot by police is kind of a mundane story for US news. Happens multiple times every day. The guy didn’t kill anyone. You have to rack up quite a kill count to stay in the news multiple days here.

I don’t think it matters if he’s personally racist or not, although I think he is. His actions are what’s  important, and I think it’s going to get worse heading into the election. I also worry that it’s only a matter of time before this bile riles people up to the point of real political violence.

Probably has a lot to do with DHS controlling information about the event, not wanting to inspire others. I know they’ve been watching that group specifically for a while.

Wouldn’t be surprised if the whole “Area 51” Facebook campaign is a way for DHS to take attention off the detention camps.

There is a very real problem going on in central America, and it has very real repercussions up north. No one is willing to address these problems. It’s a real clusterfuck.

I’m with you. I almost can’t do social media anymore. What this administration is doing is horrifying, start to finish . And I’m watching as its political opponents, of which I am one, are backbiting internally about who’s for impeachment and who isn’t, what’s not happening quickly enough, and so on.

It feels like so much rage against the dying of our democracy, simultaneously with   s o much hand-wringing, so much risk aversion . And yet s uch unclear direction for how we overcome our present situation, how we resist, how we counteract, and then how we build from there.

It also seems like too many people are more concerned about the image of our country (e.g., “this isn’t the America I know...” etc.) than they are about the folks in concentration camps and the folks dying of opioid addiction, and the homeless folks in the streets.

It’s why I like the few candidates that express clear visions and plans and see our myriad problems clearly and in detail . I just hope their candidacies are successful.

And I hope that, in the meantime, enough of us figure out how to advocate for those who are suffering in their present, daily lives under this administration. Voting once every year, two, or four ain’t gonna cut it. We have to get off our asses and do what we can in our actual lives, as well.

That pretty much sums up the hypocrisy of both the Ds and Rs.

As for the chants, when you chant that at a fellow citizen, who is a different race then you, it’s racism. I’m a third generation Italian, and my grandmother had the same rhetoric yelled at her by ignorant fucks.

Historically, there’s never been a separation between racism and nationalism. As an example (not saying the Rs are Nazis) the Nazis (the pinnacle of nationalist governments) didn’t care whether Jews were German citizens or not. Anyone who isn’t just like you is outlawed, whether that be by race, religion, sexuality, disability...

I agree with pretty much everything you’re saying. If you ever think about historical catastrophes and wonder what you would have done if you were there...well, you’re about to find out.

Politically speaking, I’ve always been solidly on the liberal side of the spectrum, but I’ve moved sharply to the left in recent years. It started with Trump’s election but I’ve been also very disillusioned by the Democrats’ fecklessness as an opposition party. It’s been eye opening. Too many of them - including the party leadership - seem to be stuck 30 years in the past, too scared to take a stand on anything and letting Republicans frame the debate and constrain their actions. There are some exceptions, including the ones Trump’s been attacking, and they’ve been a breath of fresh air. I really hope they don’t get shot.

The Obama administration took a pretty hard line on immigrants but there was not a deliberate policy to immiserate them as a deterrence to others. Nor did previous presidents attack minority members of Congress at rallies. Anyone who looks at that, or for that matter the 20+ allegations of sexual assault , and either approves of  it or waves it away because of “the economy” or “taxes” - well, it may not make them a bad person but it does mean we inhabit different moral universes .

I’m there, too, and it concerns me about how little my daily routine is changing in light of these events. I am too comfortable and too dependent on my current routine working. Soul-searching time.

Politically, I grew up extremely conservative and most of my immediate family is 100% in the Trump camp. They live in deeply rural Eastern Oregon, which is an ideological bubble like you wouldn’t believe, and my Dad is a fundamentalist Evangelical Christian.

I really started to question that whole worldview in Bible College, however, as I saw the worldview ultimately fail to live up to its theological assertions AND how its culture failed to see the world humbly or accurately, and failed its own spectacularly when their lives didn’t fit their vision. Mine didn’t because I was gay, and conversion therapy was making everything worse for me. But anyway, I pivoted away somewhat mildly over time and more toward civil libertarianism, voting for Ron Paul in both 2008 and 2012.

I finally came out in 2013 at age 30 as the last of the conservative Christian culture really failed me (even though I still consider myself Christian, just in a different form), and as I saw how libertarianism failed in both theory and in practice to help anyone but the already wealthy and connected. That’s when I became a liberal. And I’ve grown more liberal over time, as well.

I’m kind of split in thinking between the pragmatists and the idealists. Not the centrists and their naivete. The Squad is a breath of fresh air to me, although sometimes they shoot themselves in the feet, as everyone does. We just have too few of them.

In the meantime, I’m here trying to get my Masters degree so I can help fix my city’s homelessness, environmental, racial inequity, and housing unaffordability after I graduate in 2 years. While drowning in debt to do it. I’m trying to figure out how to help folks at the border and in addictions. I just feel like I should be doing more. That we all should be. And I fear that if we don’t, it’ll get far worse far too quickly, and be far too difficult to stop when it does. It’s bad enough already.

Eh, I have friends who were border patrol agents during the Obama administrations, and friends who were detained by DHS during the Obama administration. They were doing similar shit then. It’s fucked up, but the bigger iss ue lies with what’s happening in Central America. People don’t flee their homeland end mass unless something has gone wrong.

That’s what I was refe rring to.

As far as men assaulting women, definitely a societal issue that has nothing to do with politics. As a father of two daughter, it’s a big concern of mine.

I’m a poor who has enough skills and works enough jobs between my wife and I to make due. The economy and taxes are of no concern to me.

I’m not denying what your friends are saying but there are plenty of sources indicating that conditions have, overall, gotten much worse. And the Trump administration deliberately pursued child separation as a policy in a way previous admins didn’t. That’s not to say it never happened before, but it wasn’t done as a matter of course.

If your choice at the ballot box is between someone who has been accused of sexual assault dozens of times and someone who hasn’t, and you go with the first guy, well then is sexual assault really an issue for you? (I’m using “you” as a hypothetical, by the way, not saying this applies to you specifically).

And then there’s the racism. People are not rational, but they are good at rationalizing, and they’ll twist their mind into pretzels to call it something other than racism so they can justify it to themselves and others. Or if they’re stuck in the demented right-wing media bubble they can just call it fake news. Denying reality is one thing. But when it’s acknowledged that he does these awful things and handwaved away because some other thing he does makes up for it? That’s where I have a problem, and my point is, no, there are some things that are unconditionally disqualifying.

the more we say the more emboldened they get, the more we do the more emboldened they get. The power and money has doubled down and chosen power and money over humanity...yet again.

It’s disgusting, embarrassing , maddening, depressing and it makes me sick. It made me sick people tuned in to watch this fucking rancid piece of shit fire people and act a fool on tv... that th ey liked it so much they decided to turn our entire country into a fucked up reality show...only n ow the consequences are dangerous and all too real . Sad part is the majority of supporters are too stupid to see it.

While the GOP has the country at each others throats with this tabloid level bs , I can’t shake the feeling they are using the opportunity to use these   distractions to pull even more nefarious strings ...the kind of shit that will have grave consequences.

It’s truly amazing that the age of information we live in puts facts at our fingertips...yet the masses choose to ignore them for blatant lies that jive with their small mindedness.
